Srinagar: Kashmir valley received moderate to heavy snowfall while summer capital, Srinagar, turned white for a brief period when people woke up this morning, ending a long dry spell.
Though the minimum temperature witnessed improvement due to cloudy sky,the became chillier as evening approached following snowfall and rain in Kashmir valley.
According to a Met department spokesman, light to moderate rain and snow would occur at many places in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. During the subsequent 48 hours, there is possibility of fairly widespread and widespread rain or snow in the state.
After 12.4 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours, the summer capital, Srinagar, recorded light snowfall when people woke up this morning. Roof and tree tops and plain fields besides roads turned white for a brief period. This was followed by light rain before weather again turned dry though sky was heavily overcast in the city, where many roads were waterlogged due to faulty drainage system. Despite chilly weather in the morning, students could be seen attending their tuition and coaching classes in the city, particularly in the uptown.
Though the maximum temperature has dropped and witnessed two notches below normal yesterday, the minimum temperature recorded further improvement. Against minus 0.6 degree recorded yesterday, it was minus 0.1 degree, two notches above normal in the city.
The Met spokesman said there is possibility of light rain or snow and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 6 degree, a notch below normal and minus 2 degree, considered normal during this time of the year, known as Chilai-e-Kalan, the 40 day harshest period of winter, which started on December 21, when Srinagar recorded the coldest night at minus 6.5 degree.
Skiers, adventure lovers and tourists were out on slopes at Gulmarg, world famous ski resort where about two feet of snowfall was recorded during the past 24 hours. It was heavily snowing in the morning.
Light to moderate snow was experienced right from Narbal to Tangmarg on Gulmarg road.
Roof and tree tops besides world class ski slopes were under about two feet of snow, much to the delight of skiers and adventure lovers besides those associated with tourist trade, who are expecting good winter season after summer season was washed away due to more than five month unrest. The authorities have decided to allow only those vehicles, which will tie chain over their wheels to avoid any slip on Tanmarg-Gulmarg road.
Cold and foggy conditions continued to prevail in north India on Wednesday which led to delay in services of 67 north-bound trains.
