SRINAGAR:Due to the unrest in Kashmir, walnut growers are suffering for the past three months.
This year, walnut production was fifty percent less as compared to last year due to the hot climate and walnut growers have also taken huge loan from banks, due to which they are under stress and are facing huge losses.
"In these days, growers are selling their walnuts on the banks of Dal Lake with the aim to earn their bread and butter. But unfortunately our eyes are only getting tired from morning to evening as we don't have customers except few local customers," said walnut grower Mehraj-ud-din.
"We appeal to the government for help in giving some relaxation in their loans as they are not capable to pay back the bank installments," he added.
Last year, walnut production was good and so was the tourist inflow.
But this year the situation is totally different and they are facing lot of problems due to the three months of unrest.
After the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen (Hizb) militant Burhan Muzaffar Wani, the entire valley is under siege and people are facing problems due the curfew and strikes which has resulted Kashmir valley is without fruit growers including walnut growers.
