Srinagar: The SKIMS administration has given details about the latest status of procurement and installation of PET-CT in the institute.
In a statement issued to KNS, the authorities of SKIMS said that it is divulged that RCC at SKIMS has been upgraded to the status of State Cancer Institute few years ago and a grant of Rs 120 crores has been allocated to it by centre for development of its infrastructure and procurement of logistics.
Further some MPs had also given funds for procurement of PET-CT at SKIMS.
In this regard the present administration would like to clarify few things.
Firstly it is to be noted that PET-CT is a diagnostic tool used for staging cancer and is not a magic tool which cures it, which seems to be popular myth.
Secondly, although previous administration at SKIMS has made an appreciable effort to procure it, but they have overseen the fact that to run it certain radio-active isotopes are needed which are generated in a separate machine called a Cyclotron.
In other words a PET machine without isotopes is useless and for generating isotopes we need a cyclotron. Although previous administration has already identified allocated a space for installation of PET-CT, however a safe place for installation of Cyclotron has not been identified yet. Because of this the whole process of installation of PET-CT at SKIMS will be delayed for some time. (KNS)
