Srinagar: The families of inmates lodged in Sub-Jail Baramulla Wednesday alleged that Jail Superintendent mistreats and harasses the prisoners there.
They said that people lodged in Sub-Jail Baramulla on the charges of stone-pelting and other militancy related incidents have been facing tough time, ever since Rajni Sehgal assumed the charged of Jail Superintendent there.
“Recently, some of the inmates observed hunger strike for day’s together against the maltreatment at the hands of Jail Superintendent. On the directions of Jail Superintendent, the inmates who suffer from many ailments are not being taken to hospitals. They (inmates) are not being treated as humans when it comes to health-care, sanitation and other facilities,” some of the relatives of the inmates told news agency CNS.
“We are concerned for the welfare and wellbeing of our children. They do not get proper and humane treatment inside the jail. The present Jail Superintendent treat them like animals,” they said and appealed Director General Prisons to look into the matter.
Pertinently, after remaining suspended for nearly 15 months in connection with the attack on Pakistani prisoner Sanna-ullah Ranjay inside Jammu's Kotbalwal jail on in 2013; which later resulted into his death at PGI hospital Chandigarh, Home Department Government of Jammu and Kashmir had reinstated former jail Superintendent Kotbalwal Rajni Sehgal and had posted her as Superintendent District Jail Udhampur. From there she was transferred to Sub-Jail Baramulla.
Though Jail Superintendent Sub-Jail Baramulla was not in office when CNS tried to contact her, however, a top official there said that due to prevailing situation, it has become very difficult for them to shift some of the ailing inmates to hospitals. “Rest is all right here and all inmates are treated well. We adhere to Jail manuals,” he said.
Director General Prisons Mr S.K.Mishra said that he will look into the matter. “I will talk to Jail Superintendent to find out why the families of inmates are leveling such allegations,” he said. (CNS)
