Srinagar: At least 15 volunteers who were providing assistance to injured persons at SMHS hospital since the ongoing uprising started in Kashmir were Thursday arrested by police and were lodged in Kak Sarai, Shaheed Gunj and Batamaloo Police Stations, sources said.
Sources told KNS that at least 15 volunteers were arrested by the police outside the hospital who were coming back to hospital from their homes in the wee hours of this morning.
They said that besides volunteers, three ambulances were also kept by the police. “The seven volunteers have been placed at Kak Sarai police station while four have been lodged at Shaheed Gunj and others have been placed at PS Batamaloo,” sources said.
Sources informed KNS that the volunteers had been earlier asked by the authorities to vacate from the hospital and stop providing help to injured person at hospital. “The volunteers however continued to with their work and finally were arrested today,” they said, adding that the volunteers belong to different NGOs and Islamic organizations.
Meanwhile, a top police official informed KNS that volunteers have been arrested for questioning over the registration of vehicles they use as ambulances. “We have reports that most of their vehicles are not registered and have no number plates as well. Following the reports, the volunteers have been detained for questioning over the registration of ambulances,” he said.
He said that step was taken as part of security measures.
However, the volunteers group told KNS that a few among the volunteers were released so far while several others are still lodged at three police stations. (KNS)
