Srinagar: Police on Monday foiled the UN march of Kashmir legislator Abdul Rashid Sheikh and detained him along with scores of party activists in Srinagar.
The Awai Ittehad Party (AIP) chairman led the protest from Polo View in Srinagar and headed towards the UN office in Sonwar, but police stopped them near the Municipal Park and detained Rashid and other activists.
Thanking Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for what he said raising Kashmir issue at the UN and demanding plebiscite, Rashid called on Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj – who is scheduled to address the UNGA today – to “say yes to plebiscite call of Sharif”.
“Thanks Nawaz Sharif,” read a placard held by Rashid during the march. “Now Sushma Swaraj, It Is Your Turn, Say Yes To Plebiscite.”
"Today’s protest march towards UN Office was aimed at drawing focus of world community not to listen the lies of Sushma Swaraj during her expected speech at UN today and ask her to agree to right to self-determination of Kashmiris," said Rashid.
“If Nawaz Sharief could say yes to Plebiscite, it is mandatory on Sushma Sawaraj to respond positively and agree to right to self-determination for Kashmiris. If India claims to be the largest democracy in the world, what moral authority it has to crush the peaceful mass resistance in Jammu and Kashmir.” (CNS)
