Srinagar: At a time when it is difficult for patients to step out for medical attention due to unrest in Kashmir, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) today pitched for home medical care that would better serve the health needs of people.
President DAK Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a statement said that health care at home would bring huge relief to patients who are unable to get to hospitals.
There is a growing demand for this less intrusive care in a dignified and comfortable setting.
Combination of portable medical equipment and the revival of age-old practice of doctors coming into the homes to treat patients will deliver the best medical services.
The services will not only have doctors and nurses reaching homes of patients but also sample collection for conducting lab tests, delivering of medicine and ECG at the doorstep of patients.
This will be a paradigm change where instead of patient going to the hospital, medicare comes to one’s home.
Under the prevailing conditions, it becomes all the more important and needs immediate legislative push.
This system is in practice at many places particularly for aged population and the results are promising.
It is quite ordeal to see a doctor in a hospital, if you are a frail older patient.
There is ample evidence that comfort and convenience of home environment allow patients to recover faster.
It has been observed that 80% of patients who throng a hospital OPD can be treated in the comfort of one’s home and many aspects of less critical care can now be provided at home thereby freeing specialists and super specialists to take care of more critical cases. (CNS)
