Srinagar: A complete shutdown was observed across Kashmir Valley on 80th day of the ongoing mass uprising while clashes and protests erupted at multiple places during the day.
Three police station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta and Khanyar – continued to reel under restrictions with hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel deployed across length and breadth on streets since early morning. The other areas of the Old City were also under forces’ siege. There was however civilian movement without any disruption in all these areas.
In the evening, stone-throwing clashes erupted at many Old City localities including Nowhatta, Rajouri Kadal, Khankhah-e-Moulla, Safa Kadal, Bhoro Kadal and Noor Bagh during which forces used teargas and pepper shells against the youth protesters. In Civil Lines and uptown area of the Srinagar, moderate movement of private transport and pedestrians was seen since early morning but all the shops, commercial establishments, educational institutes and banks were closed. The forces were deployed at sensitive areas in strength.
Reports said that clashes erupted at Soura area of city here this evening after police attempted to arrest a local pro-freedom activist. The reports said that people came out of their houses and staged pro-freedom and anti-India protests. Police resorted to teargas shelling on protesters at Sabzi Mandi, ensuing clashes between the two sides.
Reports said that a complete shutdown was also observed in other parts of the Valley including in south and north Kashmir districts. All kinds of business and educational activities remained completely halted in these districts while clashes and protests erupted at Goriwan area of Bijbehera and also at Mazhama in Budgam district of central Kashmir.
According to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, situation remained normal and peaceful throughout the valley today. The statement said that during the day greater movement of vehicular traffic was observed in the valley including the Srinagar city.
It said 55 miscreants were arrested during past 24 hours from various parts of the Valley who are wanted in various offences of creating disruptions in normalcy.
