The decision of the authorities regarding the syllabus for the board examination of class XII is in no way in the interest of the students. None of us have studied or completed the entire prescribed syllabus either in schools or at our respective tuition centres. As is known to everyone, our schools shut for summer vacations on 1st July and were scheduled to reopen on 17th July, which didn't happen due to the uprising after Burhan Wani's killing.
This entire year, we have only attended our schools for some 3 months and the authorities expect us to sit in an examination in which we will be tested for 100% of the prescribed syllabus (which is so lengthy that it isn’t always completed in the schools even during a normal session). What we fail to understand is that how do the authorities expect us to study nearly 60% of the syllabus on our own and also appear in the board exams for the same? While we appreciate that they have issued the date sheet well in advance than they usually do, it isn't going to ease our problem.
The concepts taught in 12th standard are pretty advanced and not having studied them in schools beforehand makes it pretty hard for us to grasp them fully. The Education minister’s excuse for not reducing the syllabus for the exam is that he wants to enable us for the various competitive exams of the country but we fail to understand how he thinks that after having faced a loss of more than 2 and a half months, can we be prepared enough to compete in these national level exams. Given the present situation, it is hard for us to even appear in the board exams let alone national level exams. The authorities need to approach this from our perspectives too. In case they do not reduce our syllabus, they might as well fail us in the board exams which will make us ineligible for all these competitive exams that our minister is referring to in every conference and every public address of his. If the authorities are really interested in the welfare of the students, they need to give us some relaxation in the syllabus.
It isn’t an unjust demand considering we barely got 3 months to study in our schools this year and even if by some miracle, the schools are allowed to reopen from Oct 3, we will still not get enough time to complete the entire syllabus in time for examination. Appearing for exams for the entire syllabus will only lower our percentage and in today’s competitive world, a good percentage is quite essential to be able to get admission in any decent college. We hope that the authorities will understand our dilemma and look into the matter.
A reduction in the syllabus, however small it may be, will at least give us a chance at our future. We hope the authorities put our interests over theirs for once and instead of toying with our future, prove to be worthy of the offices they hold.
