SRINAGAR: FreeKhurram campaign Friday received a big boost when an online petition was launched to press for the immediate release of rights activist Khurram Parvez.
The petition was launched on Change.org — a petition website operated by an American corporation having over 100 million users. Started by one Vishal Tondon, the petition addressed to Parvez Imroz, JKCCS founder and Khurram’s colleague, said: “We are signing this petition so you may please carry forward our voices in support of your efforts to free human rights activist Khurram Parvez from detention by the J&K Government under the draconian PSA Act.”
Khurram was detained in a nocturnal raid on September 16 hours before being barred from flying to Geneva to attend United Nations Human Rights Council’s session. He was initially put under ‘preventive detention’ before slapped with PSA and lodged in Jammu’s Kot Bhalwal.
“We know Mr Khurram Parvez, through his work with the Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society to be a diligent worker for peace and human rights, and we see his incarceration as a gross violation of basic human rights in the country. Mr Imroz, please allow our voices to join yours, so as to amplify the movement to have Mr Khurram Parvez released immediately,” the petition reads.
