Srinagar: Asserting that the state has suffered due to Indus Water Treaty (IWT) between India and Pakistan, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, however, said that the present NDA government was not going to scrap it.
Terming the pact as abomination, he said it has survived four wars and a J&K Assembly unanimous resolution against it. “It was an abomination and should never have gone through. J&K has suffered long on its account but this government isn't going to scrap it,” Mr Abdullah, who is the working president of main opposition National Conference (NC), wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
The tweet by Mr Abdullah comes a day after Centre hinted at revisiting IWT with Pakistan if it does not act against militancy.
“Will stick my neck out & say that nothing will happen to the Indus Water Treaty. It survived 4 wars & a J&K assembly unanimous resolution,” he added.
India yesterday said that goodwill and cooperation on both sides was important for such a treaty to work. “There are differences on the treaty. For any such treaty to work, it is important for mutual trust and cooperation. It cannot be a one-sided affair,” Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said yesterday in a press conference.
India and Pakistan signed the IWT, brokered by the World Bank, in 1960.
