Srinagar: The Ladakh Scouts Regiment (LSR) has yielded the maximum number of Indian Army Mountaineers, who have glorified the name of the India and Indian Army all around the world.
A defence ministry spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said one such expedition team of 1st Bttalion SCR was flagged off from Leh by Lt Gen PJS Punnu, GOC Fire and fury Corps yesterday for an unclimbed peak Pt 6876m (22559 feet) situated in Eastern Ladakh Region (J&K).
Col Kalia said that it is one of the most difficult peak of the region selected primarily due to its technicality in rock face, treacherous terrain, ice walls and all difficulties involved in conquering the summit.
The team of 20 members comprising of 3 Officers, 1 JCO and 16 Other Ranks is being led by Maj Lotos Spalges of The Ladakh Scouts Regiment, an avid mountaineer who led an Indian Army expedition to Mt Thalay Sagar in Uttarkashi in 2015 and also has to his name many other expeditions such as Saser Kangri, Plateau Peak and Chader Trek.
Team comprises of experienced mountaineers who have previous experience of Mt Everest, South Pole, Mt Chou Yu (China), Marble Peak (Kazakhstan) and many other expeditions. The expedition team has undergone six weeks arduous physical and technical training under the guidance of Mountaineering experts before the expedition.
The team was flagged off from Leh and will move to Durbuk where it will acclimatize for 4 days and move further to KM 130 in Sub Sector North. There onward the team will embark for the challenging expedition route towards east of KM 130 and will set up five camps including a Base Camp in between road head and the summit peak.
The 43 days of expedition are going to pose extreme difficulties and unforeseen challenges for the expedition team.
The expedition is being conducted to exhibit the adventurous spirit of the Indian Army and will demonstrate the physical robustness of our troops. This expedition will be an inspiration for all to take up more such expeditions to virgin peaks in the region, Col Kalia said.
