Srinagar: At least a dozen of Photojournalists who were on way to cover clashes were Saturday beaten by the cops at Batamaloo area of Srinagar.
According to KNS photojournalist, Umer Asif who was also beaten by the cops said that they were on way to cover the clashes in the interiors of Batamaloo area during which JK Police officials stopped them.
“We also showed curfew passes but policemen declined to honour the curfew passes, tore them and started abusing and beating us ruthlessly with canes,” he said.
Following the thrashing, the photojournalists staged sit-in at main Chowk Batamaloo.
The photojournalists who were beaten by the cops and were injured were identified as Mubashir Khan, Faisal Khan, Aman Farooq, Jehangir Ahmad, Bilal Bahadur, Suhail Hamid Shalla and Umer Asif.
Meanwhile, Kashmir Press Photographers Association (KPPA) condemned the “abusing and ruthless beating up” of over a dozen photojournalists by J&K Police.
Reports quoting KPPA spokesman said, “They would be forced to hit the streets and cordon the residence of the Chief Minister if action was not taken against the guilty policemen.” (KNS)
