SRINAGAR: Responding to the call of united resistance leadership, Srinagar markets opened on Monday evening after days shutdown. However, in major business hubs it was short lived.
The united resistance leadership have asked people to open markets after 6 PM on shutdown days. Given the mass uprising Kashmir witnessed since July 09, a day after popular militant commander Burhan Wani was killed, resistance leadership came out with a protest calendar.
In the fresh such calendar, people were given relaxation in shutdown from 6 PM in the evening every day. Responding positively to the call, Srinagar markets opened this evening and are abuzz with customers, however, as soon as shop keepers started opening their shops in Lal Chowk, a police van came and asked them to shut.
Aware of deal, we had come to buy some stuff for injured, a professor told media, but when we reached Koker Bazar, police was enforcing shutdown and we had leave the area.
Similar scenes were witnessed on Residency Road when shopkeepers opened their shops as routine. However, a police van made one round of the area directing the businessmen not to open any shop.
This is ridiculous, one such businessman said, why are we being not allowed to resume business now? Some shops had started their business at Regal Chowk but they were shut.
Everything happened in front of almost a dozen reporters who were witnessing this near Mushtaq Enclave. They (police) gestured towards me not to open camera, a reputed photo journalist said.
Reports reaching from civil lines and uptown areas said that markets opened and they are full. I have not seen such movement in Hyderpora area in last fortnight except during demonstrations, a reporter who lives in Pirbagh said. Same was the case in Jawahar Nagar and Bhagat.
Similar reports are coming from Old Srinagar where shops have opened. Shops selling essential items have opened in Rajouri Kadal area, a local said, however, there is not much activity.
