PATTAN: People in this highway township are up in arms against local municipal committee as it has dumped the garbage collected from the township in a residential area sparking fears of an epidemic.
On Thursday hundreds of residents staged protests against Pattan Municipal Committee with many a protesters alleging that the committee has not been paying heed to public demand.
Demanding removal of heaps of garbage, particularly which has been dumped in New Colony, the residents blocked Nihalpora-Pattan road and shouted slogans against the Municipality.
The New Colony garbage dump is a favourite for hordes of stray dogs posing a big threat to children and elderly.
Sajad Ahmed, a local resident said that he along with other residents have been pleading before municipal committee for removal of garbage but they never paid any attention forcing us to hit the roads.
After almost one hour executive officer of the committee appeared on the sport and assured protesters that all the garbage will be removed soon, witnesses said.
Following the assurance people of the area called off their demonstration and the transport was restored on the road.
Executive officer Niyaaz Ahmed talking to Kashmir Observer said since Municipality has no piece of land where it could dump this garbage such problems will occur. We have brought this into the notice of DC Baramulla and other higher authorities and hopefully they will find a solution to this problem in near future .This time we will remove this garbage and in fact I have directed the concerned ones to remove the garbage from the site
