Mathematics, the queen of sciences, is a language of numbers. We come across numerous problems in which numbers and logistics plays an important role, every day. Knowingly or unknowingly, we use mathematics almost every single day. A good understanding of mathematics is essential to make sense of all the numbers and problems that life throws at us.
We actually live in an age of mathematics today. We may think that we are using common sense to solve our problems but what we actually use is logistics, a type of mathematics. Let us take the example of Metrology. We all know how much we rely on our beloved Mr Sonam Lotus for predicting the weather correctly. But, do you know that he also uses mathematics to predict the weather? IT sector, which is considered to be the most important and emerging sector of today wouldnt have flourished without mathematics. We even have mathematics in programming – the operating system of your mobile and the operating system of your computer are actually based on mathematics. Aeronautics too uses mathematics. Satellites and rockets are built on mathematical calculations. In short, everything today relies on mathematics.
It is almost impossible to get through a day without using mathematics in some way because our world is full of numbers to handle and problems to solve. Studying mathematics equips us with tools which make our life a little bit easier. However, it is very unfortunate that we are still stuck in the 19th century and for us mathematics only means applying standard techniques to solve well defined problems with unique answers. Even though the arena of mathematics has completely changed, we still lag behind. Our understanding of the subject is still restricted to cramming up formulae and theorems.
Mathematics, as a subject, evolved thousands of years ago when people learnt some standard techniques and their applications. Today, we have computing devices that can do calculations faster than us. Today, more emphasis is laid on deeper understanding of how mathematics works than on mugging up formulae. Mathematics is now deemed as the backbone of life. It has expanded its horizons in every direction now. Today, the whole world of science is being ruled by mathematics. It wont be an exaggeration to call a person not familiar with numbers, illiterate. Studying mathematics actually means equipping yourself with a life-based skill. It is unfortunate that our society displays a step-motherly attitude towards mathematics. Mathematics was never a subject to be crammed. It is a subject to be understood and applied. Therefore, if we want to stay at par with the rest of the world, we need to understand the importance of mathematics deeply.
