Srinagar: Nine civilians including two policemen were injured when clashes erupted between two localities over burying of a woman in a graveyard in Kukroosa, Handwara in north Kashmirs Kupwara district.
Muhammad Akbar Rather a Kukroosa resident, whose mother passed away last night, told KNS that they sent a gravedigger to dig a grave for his mother but unfortunately some locals assembled outside the graveyard and pelted stones on them as they were not allowing them to bury her there.
The group did not allow my mother to be buried in the graveyard. They claimed that we have sold it to them and wont allow us to bury our dead, he told KNS.
This denial led to verbal brawls and then to stone pelting, in which at least 10 persons got injured, he said.
However, police rushed to the spot and the woman was buried in the graveyard after police provided protection to the mourners.
Earlier, Divisional Commissioner had ordered that the both the parties are allowed to bury their members in the graveyard.
Rather said that the group which attacked them today rejected the orders.
According to KNS correspondent, Fayaz Hamid, SP Handwara Ghulam Jeelani Wani said that nine persons, including two policemen were injured when the two agitated groups clashed with each other. Jeelani said that police has registered an FIR into the incident.
Some elders of the two groups have been called to the police station to resolve the dispute amicably. And I hope it will be settled after within days, the SP said. (KNS)
