SRINAGAR: Despite tall promises by the government to work towards eliminating all the miseries of the people, the woes of the general public only seem to be increasing. Many areas of Srinagar city have complained that they are facing an acute water shortage, from past several months. Many residents complained that they are facing numerous hardships due to water scarcity, especially in the month of Ramazan when it is difficult to fetch water from far distances. Areas of Umerhair, Usmanabad, which connect 90-feet road to Soura are without proper water supply since September 7 floods. These areas comprise of more than 150 houses with some 873 people living in them. The locals say that they have been visiting the PHE office on a regular basis for several months but all their efforts have been in vain as the concerned officials are least bothered about their complaints.
Dr Mohammad Sidiq Bhat, a resident of Usmanabad said, Our taps are running dry ever since 2014 floods. We have complained to the officials of the PHE Department about the issue many times but our complaints are falling on deaf ears. Even though Ms Asiya Naqash, Honourable Minister for Housing and Urban Development promised to look into the matter, nothing has been done till date. A trickle of water does run through the taps installed by the PHE outside our house in mornings and evenings but, the water flow is so less that it takes hours to fill a bucket. People of the locality have to wait for hours to collect water in buckets and tubs. We are facing extreme hardships due to shortage of water but nobody seems to care. We have approached the authorities many times but they seem to be least concerned about our problems. If this issue is not resolved soon, we will come out on the streets to protest, said Rouf Ahmed, another resident.
Our office also received complaints of water shortage from many other areas like Hawal, Rainawari, Alamgiri bazaar and even some uptown areas like Baghat, Rawalpora of the city. The residents complained that the authorities, despite repeated complains, seem to be unmoved. Chief Engineer PHE, Mr GM. Bhat, on being contacted said, There may be less water supply in some areas but the reports that there is no water supply are incorrect. We are monitoring each and every area and ensuring all the areas of the city are supplied with water. When asked why Usmanabad and Umerhair are without proper water supply since 2014 floods, the Chief Engineer said, It is impossible that there is no water supply. But if there is any such issue, I will definitely look into the matter.
