Srinagar: The memories of Tufail Ahmad Matoo, the only son of his parents who was killed on this date six years ago when a tear-gas shell hit him near Gani Memorial Stadium in Rajouri Kadal, continue to haunt his father Muhammad Asharaf Matto as the alleged culprits are still roaming scot free. It is an open and shut case, Ashraf, the father says. Eyewitnesses deposed before the court, identified the two killer cops and yet the culprits were not touched.
The tear-gas shell according to eyewitnesses was fired by local policemen on duty. I have no faith in Koul Commission that was constituted by former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to probe the 2010 killings, Ashraf said. Judiciary is the only tool that can heal my wounds. I have faith in judiciary believe that justice will ultimately be served.
Matoo is apparently angry with the one-man Koul Commission for not summoning the former Chief Minister. Why the former Chief Minister cant be called to appear before the commission for questioning, he said. If the law is equal for everyone then they should have called the former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to appear before the commission.
When former Prime Minister of India Narsimha Rao, he said, can appear before court then how come a state Chief Minister can refuse to do so.
All the eyewitnesses had categorically stated that they had seen two policemen chasing and firing on my son. A woman present on spot had even caught hold of a policeman who fired at Tufail. The irony is that the official account has been given credence over the evidence of eyewitnesses and this development is shameful, he said.
Despite Investigating Team shielding killers, we are still hopeful and relying on the powers and freedom of judiciary that it enjoys in a democratic set up, Matoo said.
