Srinagar: The inter-district transportation system was disrupted in South Kashmir after locals from Khudwani Qaimouh area of Kulgam district observed shutdown and blocked highway against the random arrest of youth in the area.
The protesting locals alleged that on the pretext of cop killings in Anantnag district police have been targeting youth, detaining and interrogating them at will.
Without any proof youth are being picked up and interrogated. Out of six arrested youth, four are still languishing in detention centres, the protesters said. The arrested youth have been identified as Parvez Ahmed Matoo, Wasim Ahmed Dar, Aqib Ahmed Sofi and Umar Rasheed.
The protesters blocked Kulgam-Anantnag road resulting in the complete disruption of the transportation system. All the shops and business establishments remained shut while both private and government educational institutes also remained closed for the day.
The protesters demanded immediate release of these youth. A police official said that the detained youth are known stone-pelters and are being questioned in connection with the killing of two policemen in Anantnag district last week.
