Srinagar: In a move that is bound to raise eyebrows in Kashmir, the central government in liaison with Jammu and Kashmir is in process of building a separate high-security prison like the notorious one at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to house convicted terrorists from Pakistan and those facing trial in terror cases.
The new detention facility comes in the backdrop of union government fearing indoctrination and radicalization of other prisoners by the fellow inmates, who are charged with serious terror-related cases.
The news was first published in newspaper, The Telegraph, which, quoting the Union home ministry sources, claimed that the decision to set up a separate prison in Srinagar was taken recently and it was communicated to chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, who heads the PDP-BJP coalition government in the state.
The newspaper source claims that the J&K CM has given her nod for establishing the facility and have sought 7 crore for building the same.
The J&K government has agreed to the Centre’s proposal and asked for Rs 7 crore last month to build a separate jail exclusively for terrorists like the one in Guantanamo,” a source in the Union home ministry was quoted by the newspaper.
The Centre decision to set up a separate jail for terrorists following a report from security agencies that terror convicts and suspects lodged in the jails in Jammu and Kashmir were a “big threat” even inside the jails as they are likely to lure and radicalise petty criminals, reads the newspaper report.
