SRINAGAR: Under strong pressure from the students, Kashmir University Tuesday decided to roll back the controversial fee hike that triggered massive protests within the varsity campus for the past two days. Students, who had boycotted the class work, could be seen swarming onto the roads in thousands creating a massive law and order situation.
The Vice Chancellor has ordered to revoke the fee hike notification, Prof G N Khaki, Provost KU, announced the decision this evening. There will be a formal order by this evening uploaded on KU website, he said. The new comers will pay fee according to earlier norms set by varsity.
Meanwhile, varsity officials said that they were following the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines with regard to the recently announced fee hike.
As the new Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was implemented from this academic session, so we had to revise the fee structure, Dean Students Welfare, Prof Fayaz Ahmad said. Till 2015 academic session, a student paid Rs 1000 for his/her examination but with the introduction of CBCS, courses were divided.
Following the UGC guidelines, he said, a student has to attend four core credit papers. In addition to core papers, a student has to attend elective and open elective papers as well which means a student will be studying 5, 6 or 7 courses now.
Prof Fayaz further said that following the misconception among the student fraternity, the VC has constituted a committee which will look into the matter.
Yesterday, we had a meeting with Class Representatives (CRs) who got convinced that there was nothing like fee hike, Prof Fayaz claimed, CRs are attending the classes normally.
A student is supposed to pay Rs 60 per credit which means a student will pay at least Rs 1440 (24 credits @Rs 60) for his/her examination now, he said.
Till now, a student paid Rs 250 per paper but now a student will pay according to number of his/her credits, he said.
Meanwhile, KU Provost said that the order with regard to fee hike has been put on hold and new students will pay fee according to old norms.
