Srinagar: To mark world hypertension day (WHD), Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) today held a free hypertension screening cum awareness camp at Kashmir University (KU).
Speaking on the occasion, President DAK Dr Nisar ul Hassan said the aim of the camp is to promote public awareness of hypertension and to encourage people to prevent and control this silent killer.
Early detection is the key as it allows people to take action against high blood pressure thus preventing its potential complications. Because it is an asymptomatic disease, people dont manage it, they turn up years later with their kidneys gone, they need amputations and their eyes are bad, he said.
Dr Nisar said the community screening and awareness is vitally important to prevent premature deaths due to heart attacks and strokes.
To efficiently tackle hypertension we need to move from curative to preventive care. Regular check-ups, reduction of salt, intake of fruits and vegetables and exercise are the best ways to prevent it, he said.
Created by the world hypertension league in 2005, WHD is intended to increase awareness of the condition and issues surrounding it.
1200 persons were screened out of which 200 new cases of hypertension were detected, according to DAK.
Majority of the newly diagnosed patients were asymptomatic and were unaware of the disease.
A team of doctors who were involved in screening were Dr Riyaz Ahmad Daga (Spokesperson DAK), Dr Farooq Andrabi, Dr Surayyah Qadeem, Dr Azhar, Dr Khalid, Dr Javid Qanangoo, Dr Sajad and Dr Masroor.
