Srinagar: Senior separatist leader and publicity chief Peoples League Altaf Hussain Mattoo passed away on Monday after brief illness. He was 65 and is survived by two daughters.
Hundreds of people visited his house at Zaindar Mohalla Habbakadal and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family. Senior separatist leaders including Jammu Kashmir Peoples League Head Advocate Bashir Ahmed Tota, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Noor Muhammad Kalwal, Mushtaq-ul-Islam participated in his last rites.
Throwing light on the life and struggle of the deceased leader, separatist leader and Jammu Kashmir Peoples League head Advocate Bashir Ahmed Tota said that Altaf Hussain Mattoo was a stalwart who was associated with the Freedom Struggle since 1968. He spent half of life in Indian jails and was a staunch supporter of Kashmir freedom movement. In the prime of his life he was associated with Young Mans League that fought against Indian rule in Kashmir, he said.
Tota added that the deceased leader was part and parcel of Plebiscite Movement. He was one of the founding members of Jammu Kashmir Peoples League that emerged after the amalgam of Young Mans League, Alfathe, and Youth League in 1968 in Srinagar Central Jail, he said adding that Mattoo served Kashmir nation whole heartedly and he never compromised with the principles and ethics of his life.
