Srinagar: Minister of State for Forest, Ecology & Environment, Animal & Sheep Husbandry, Cooperative and Fisheries Mir Zahoor Ahmad today stressed need for protecting Hangul and its habitation on high priority.
The minister said that the conservation breeding of Hangul should be given priority to ensure that the number of this deer increased.
He asked the officials of Department of Wildlife to prepare a comprehensive project in this regard and submit the proposal to the concerned quarter for accord of necessary approval.
The Minister gave this instruction during his surprise visit to World Famous Dachigam National Park at Harwan today. He took stock of the facilities and the measures and management inputs for conservation of the Wildlife of the Park. He also inspected Rescue Centre, Native Interpretation Centre there.
Wildlife Warden Central, Srinagar Dachigam, Mr Tahir Shawl briefed the Minister about the Park and its biodiversity. It was given out that Dachigam National Park is known worldwide for rich biodiversity and natural beauty. The Park encompasses an area of 141 Sq KMs and is home to the last remaining population of a deer species known as Hangul or Kashmir Stag. The deer Hangul is restricted to Dachigam and adjoining area and found nowhere else.
The Minister appreciated the officials for giving publicity and informing visitors about wildlife in the park. Mr Zahoor asked officials to display hoardings about DOs and DONTs in Urdu language at the Main Ghat of the Park.
Mir Zahoor gave instructions to the concerned that children from different schools should be encouraged to visit the park and shown Wildlife documentary and educate them about the conservation of Hangul.
The Minister appreciated other efforts taken by the Management of the Park like stopping of vehicles outside the Park, grazing and biotic interference for the cause of protection and conservation of Hangul. Mir Zahoor directed them to work with utmost dedication and ensure the protection of all the species especially World Famous Hangul.
Later, the Minister inspected Laribal Trout Farm at Dachigam and took stock of the activities of the Farm.
He was informed that Laribal is one of the oldest Trout Farm of the State where breeding and both the species of trout fish including Rainbow and Brown is being carried out on latest techniques and on scientific basis.
It was given out that 6.37 lakh number of Brown Trout seed produced and supplied to various districts for stocking in various trout streams for giving extra boost to the angling industry in the State during 2015-16. Besides, 5.40 lakh number of Rainbow Trout fry has been produced which is different stages being reared in the Farm. This will cater the demand of private sector and other Government units.
It was further informed that during 2015-16, the Project sold 6.21 tonnes of trout fish and earned total revenue to the tune of Rs 30.80 lakh.
