Shotopa/Kargil: Sheikh Nazir-ul-Mehdi Mohammadi was elected as the new president of the influential religious body of this frontier region Thursday.
The Ullema (clergy) as well as senior citizens of Kargil district participated in this election of Hawza Ilmia Asnaa Ashriya (Islamia School Kargil) and elected Mohammadi for the next five years term.
Shiekh Mehdi is the son of former president late Sheikh Ahmad Mohammadi and was the top contender being a new face in the clergy which wields significant influence on people here.
Mehdi defeated the lone contender for the post and former Vice President Aga Syed Jamaluddin Mossavi.
Mehdi received 242 out of 370 votes polled.
Later talking to the Ullama Council and the people present, Sheikh Nazir Mehdi said he will try to strengthen the Islamia School and will restructure the schools youth wing.
He urged upon the people to present their views and suggestion to him through a suggestion box which will be placed at the gate of Islamia School Kargil.
Those elected to the Executive Body of Islamia School Kargil are Aga Syed Ziauddin (Vice President), Sheikh Ibrahim Khalili Pashkum (General Secretary), Sheikh Mohammad Hussain Mufeed as Imam Jumma Wal Jamiat and Sheikh Mohammad Amin Amini as treasurer.
Chairman J&K Legislative Council Haji Anayat Ali in his message has congratulated ‘young and energetic’ President Sheikh Mehdi Mohammadi.
