Srinagar :With an objective to focus on problems and prospects related to temperate sericulture industry and to provide common platform, CSR&TI, Central Silk Board, Pampore has organized two-day national seminar on sericulture development in temperate region-problems and prospects on 21st and 22nd March, 2016 at hotel Pine Spring, Srinagar.
Prof. A.R. Trag, VC, Islamic University of Science and Technology, was the chief guest, Mohd. Ashraf Bukhari, IAS, Commissioner Secretary, Agriculture production dept., J&K, Dr. Malik Farooq, Director, SDD, J&K were the guest of honors on this occasion. Dr. P. Jayaprakash, Director (Tech.) & NSSO was representing Member Secretary, Central Silk Board Bangalore.
On this occasion, he delivered the keynote address on strategies for increasing the Bi-voltine seed production in temperate region. Dr. Malik Farooq, Director, SDD, J&K also delivered a keynote address on status, problem on temperate sericulture. Dr. S.P. Sharma, Director, CSR&TI, Pampore being patron of the national seminar welcomed chief guest, guest of honor, delegates and participants to the national seminar.
Officers/delegates/scientists from CSB, SUKAST-K, TSRI, SDD participated and presented their research findings. New improved Mulberry variety PPR-1 developed by CSR&TI, Pampore was released for temperate region by Prof. A.R. Trag, VC, Islamic university of Science and Technology. The main attributes of this new variety are high rooting ability through stem cuttings, early sprouting of winter buds and enhanced leaf yield. It was emphasized that the percolation of this new variety in the field will remove some of the bottle necks in the development of sericulture industry of the state. Issues related to post cocoon sector and the probable solutions were also discussed in length.
On this occasion Abstract book of more than 120 research papers was released. Also silkworm descriptor about the characterization of silkworm genetic resources under temperate conditions was also released. Besides two hand outs on Green Manuring and new mulberry variety PPR-1 were also released.
The national seminar concluded on 22nd March with recommendations that there is a need to take the latest technologies in the field of sericulture to the farmers who are the real stake holders. Besides, it was emphasized that interventions are required in cocoon market system so that farmers get best price of their produce.
