Handwara: An ambulance driver from Sub-District Hospital Kupwara was thrashed by people after they found him ferrying passengers in ambulance and charging money from them.
The incident occurred at Chogul Handwara. People alleged that it has become a routine for the ambulance drivers of Sub District Hospital Kupwara to use hospital ambulances for personal use. We have been continuously watching these hospital drivers ferrying passengers in the ambulances and charging money from them. Today we caught a driver on spot when a passenger after paying fare alighted from the ambulance at Chogul, Nazir Ahmed Bhat told CNS adding that Ambulance (JK09-6782) was seized by people and was released only after the intervention of some respectable citizens.
Tariq Ahmed Itoo, the passenger informed that he boarded the ambulance in Srinagar and paid Rs 100 to ambulance driver. He was demanding Rs 150 from me. It is not the first time I travelled as a passenger from Srinagar to Handwara, he said.
Agitated people alleged that both Chief Medical and Block Medical Officers of Kupwara have failed to take care of the hospital and instead of acting as watchdogs; they are giving free hand to crooked employees.
Chief Medical Officer Kupwara Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone told CNS that if allegations are proved, action will be initiated against the erring driver. (CNS)
