SRINAGAR: A total of 913406 children below the age of 5 years were administered Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) during the second round of pulse polio immunization programme held here yesterday.
Against the target of 1053080 children, 913406 were covered during the immunization drive thus recording 86.74 percent achievement. The highest coverage was recorded in Leh where 97.69 percent of children numbering 11696 were administered the doses. Besides, 157206 children against the target of 177765 were covered in Srinagar.
Over 5725 vaccination booths were set up with 22900 booth team members in the division.
To ensure 100 percent coverage, the functionaries of health department will carry out the programme till February 23 to immunize the left over children. The Health, Medical Education, School Education, Rural Development and ICDs Departments besides NGOs and volunteers contributed their services to make the programme a big success.
It was informed that the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been polio free since 2010 with the last case being reported from a migratory slum (Burma Colony) of Jammu on 07 February 2010.
Pertinently, the first round of pulse polio immunization programme was successfully completed on 17th January 2016.
