SRINAGAR: Independent legislator from Langate Abdul Rashid Sheikh alias Er Rashid Tuesday said that the magisterial inquiry ordered by the government into the killing of two students by security forces in Pulwama district was meant to cover the killers.
The investigations are done by the government to cover the killers, Rashid told reporters in a press conference at his residence in Jawahar Nagar here.
According to KNS correspondent, the legislator said that police has placed him under house arrest for the third day Tuesday to stop me from going to Pulwama to mourn and protest the killings.
Today, I tried to reach the villages to express solidarity with the families of the victims who were killed on Sunday. Police stopped me and arrested me in Panthachowk, he said.
While Rasheed was speaking in the presser, a police team of Rajbagh station was deployed infront of his house.
The two-time lawmaker said that police in the state should not become a tool of oppression.
Police here is killing civilians for promo0tions. It should learn and lesson and not become a tool of oppression, he said.
He asked the police to revisit its policies towards Kashmiris and try to analyze from the comments of leading jurist, Soli Sarabji, that whatsoever happened in JNU is not sedition.
Praising the students of Jawahar Lal Nehru University in New Delhi for protesting against the hanging of Afzal Guru in February 2013 in Tihar jail, Rashid said Congress and BJP are trying to give political color to the JNU protests.
As an MLA, I thanks and salute the students and scholars of JNU for raising their voice against the hanging of Afzal Guru. The protests are an undercurrent in India against the BJP and RSS. It is an ideological war and battle of ideas, not a battle between BJP and Congress, he said.
He condemned the arrest of SAR Geelani and apprehended that to hide whatsoever is happening in JNU it may make Kashmiri students scapegoats in JNU and in other institutions.
The biased national media which often ignores the atrocities on Kashmiris and even didnt bother to say a word about brutalities in Pulwama, was forced to cry and show pictures how hundreds of students hailing from every nook and corner of India were raising slogans against Afzal and Maqbool Bhats hangings and showing their strong venom against their own state.
Rasheed reminded that not only Congress MLAs but PDP MLAs had also indorsed my stand on Afzal Guru on eve of seeking my support for Rajya Sabha and Council elections last year, as such Congress and PDPs ally BJP cant label the brave hearted students of JNU as anti-national for raising voice in favor of Afzal Guru.
He announced that his party will carry out a peaceful march in Srinagar tomorrow in solidarity with the students of JNU. (KNS)
