OKLAHOMA: Nyla Ali Khan is participating in the “Pipeline to Politics” Conference in Oklahoma City on January 30, 2016. Women who are interested in learning how to increase their involvement in politics and public service are invited to attend the Pipeline to Politics conference, presented by the Oklahoma Womens Coalition and the Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center’s Womens Leadership Initiative at the University of Oklahoma. The nonpartisan program will teach participants about effective organization and communications strategies to lead successful campaigns for issues or candidates.
The conference is set for 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma headquarters, 6100 N. Robinson Ave. in Oklahoma City.
Although Oklahoma has had women serve as governor and lieutenant governor, women comprise only 14 percent of the state Legislature, ranking 49th in the nation. The Oklahoma Womens Coalition and the Carl Albert Center seek to address the historic underrepresentation of women in politics and public life by providing tools to conduct successful campaigns.
There will be two tracks from which to choose: “Ready to Run” and “Ready to Lead.” Conference presenters will include elected officials at all levels of government, such as Ward 1 Oklahoma County Commissioner Willa Johnson, State Sen. A.J. Griffin, State Sen. Kay Floyd, former Lt. Gov. Jari Askins and Norman Mayor Cindy Rosenthal. Other sessions will be led by experts in campaign management, fundraising, media and messaging, including Neva Hill, veteran campaign consultant; Carolyn Thompson, director of government relations for Superintendent Joy Hofmeister; Mandy Winton, membership and marketing executive, Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma; Sheree Powell, director of communications, Oklahoma Department of Human Services; Katie Fitzgerald, executive director of Center for Children and Families; and Amber England, executive director of Stand for Children.
