SRINAGAR : The summer capital, Srinagar, recording minus 4.2 degree celsius minimum temperature was colder than world famous health resort of Pahalgam in the Kashmir valley, where the weather woes will continue though a Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to hit the region tomorrow.
A WD, originating in Arabia sea could enter the region through Afghanistan and Pakistani by tomorrow, which could result in isolated rain during the next 24 hours. The WD is very weak and there could be isolated rain or snow in the hill, a Met department spokesman said, adding that this will however, improve night temperature to some extent.
But, he said, the maximum temperature, which was above normal for the past about a week, could go down because of the western disturbances. Cold winds continued in the city.
The minimum temperature witnessed further drop and settled at minus 4.2 degree against yesterdays minus 3.2 degree. However, during this period of the Chilai-e-Kalan, ending at the end of this month, the normal minimum temperature is considered minus 2.
Because of the drop in the mercury, majority water bodies, including parts of the Dal Lake, particularly near banks, were again frozen. However, at some places, the frozen parts started de-freezing as the day progressed.
Pahalgam, about 100 km from here, which also serves as base camp for annual Amarnath yatra during summer in south Kashmir Himalayas recorded minus 2.7 degree, about two notches warmer than Srinagar. Against yesterdays minus 5.7 degree, it was minus 2.7 degree, more than three notches above normal, mainly due to cloudy weather during the night.
However, there was no change in the mercury at world famous Gulmarg, where those connected with tourists were worried due to less snow so far. The minimum temperature remained minus 5 degree, two notches above normal.
Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the minimum temperature was minus 3.2 degree, slightly below normal while at Kokernag, it was minus 1.3 degree, two notches above normal. At Kupwara in north Kashmir, the minimum temperature was minus 2.5 degree, half a degree below normal.
There was no relief for people in Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region though the minimum temperature witnessed some improvement. Against yesterdays minus 14.4 degree, it was minus 13.3 degree at Leh while at Kargil it was minus 12 against yesterdays minus 14 degree.
