JAMMU: A disaster preparedness programme on risk perception and mitigation was organized by the Deputy Controller Civil Defence at Himayat center Baramulla today under the supervision of chief warden CD Dr. Anayat Mir.
A large number of students participated in the programme including teachers, CD Wardens/ and SDRF people.
The session began with detailed presentation on Civil Defence organization and role of CD volunteers in disaster mitigation.
Dr. Mir Anayat chief warden said disasters cannot be done away with, but destruction from them can be lessened through appropriate measures. Some important preparedness measures include Disaster Mapping, Disaster preparedness plan, Land- use zoning, preparing community through IEC and predictability, forecast and warning. Growing menace of drug abuse in youth was highlighted in the session .They were also informed about the importance of hygiene in prevention of diseases.
Mudasir SDRF instructor demonstrated CPR, use of fire extinguisher and utility of ropes during disasters.
The overall focus of these programmes is on reshaping the youth and capacity building. Community service volunteerism, leadership, team work, responsible citizenship, self motivation, decision making, conflict resolution, accepting differences and nurturing responsibilities are some of the focus areas.
They were also informed about the treatment facilities provided by the J & K police, Civil Defence and Indian Army at Drug De-Addiction centres.
At the end an interactive session was held where students asked many questions which were answered by the experts.
The session concluded with the vote of thanks by chief guest with a request to continue such informative programmes in future. (KNS)
