Anantnag: Residents of Anantnag Town in this south Kashmir on Tuesday complained that the streetlights installed in the area by the municipal committee were not functioning. They said that some of the lights have gone out of order and the concerned officials have failed to replace them. This hampers smooth movement of inhabitants in Anantnag during hours and causes immense problems to them.
The streetlights worth crores of rupees were installed in the main market and KP Road Anantnag in several years back these lights are not functioning from the past one year.
The municipal committee Anantnag has failed to undertake the maintenance of these lights said Abdul Hameed Khan a local resident. He said from last one year we did dozens of request to Municipal Committee Anantnag to replace the damaged streetlights of Anantnag with new ones so that people can move easily in night.
Despite many reminders the municipal authorities have failed to restore these streetlights, said Abdul Raheem, a resident of KP Road. We cant venture out in the evenings as the whole areas reels under darkness.
The defunct streetlights have also affected business activity in the town. In absence of street lights people face problems to reach to the markets in evening. This forces us to close business establishments and shops early, a shopkeeper Nisar Ahmad said. Despite paying taxes for basic facilities, the authorities have failed to repair the streetlights.
If the streetlights are made functional, markets will definitely remain abuzz with the business activity during the late hours, he added.
Meanwhile, a senior official admitted that majority of street lights of MCA were lying defunct. We lack the skilled staff to make restoration of defunct street lights in Anantnag. But we are making efforts to overcome the shortage of trained staff for repairing of street lights, the official said. When contacted to the Muncipal Committee Chief Executive Anantnag his was out of reach.
