Srinagar :- Kashmir on Sunday witnessed a series of protest marches against the Saudi execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.
Thousands of people, denouncing the execution, made an attempt to march towards Lal Chowk, the political nerve centre of the Kashmir capital from various city areas.
Carrying portraits of Sheikh Nimr and banners denouncing the Saudi regime, the protesters were met with police resistance resulting in the clashes at various places.
Most of the ralies were taken out from Hassanabad, Zadibal and Lal Bazar areas of Srinagar, officials said.
Such was the severity of the protests that the authorities have decided to place these areas under curfew on Monday.
At various places Police resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse the protesters, the officials said, adding no one was injured in the clashes.
Kargil observed compleate shutdown
A compleate shutdown was observed in Kargil as well, reports said.
Thousands of people from nearby villages reached Kargil to participate in the Mourning Protest Procession which started from Islamia School Kargil and passing through many places in Kargil town concluded at Islamia School Chowk.
