Srinagar: While the hundreds of vehicles have been either seized or fined by the traffic authorities over violating norms in the Srinagar city, the illegal car parking within the city limits especially at Jahangir Chowk near fly over continues to cause immense hardships to the commuters and for the vehicular movement too.
The vehicles are seen occupying the main roads at Jahangir Chowk for the whole day. However, the officials hardly pay heed over such things and are watching it as mute spectator.
Accusing the higher authorities for ignoring their plights, the business establishments whose shops are located nearer to it demand redressal of their grievance.
While talking to KNS, Adil Rashid, a carpet seller, whose shop is located at the same place said, Despite the presence of traffic policemen at the place, scores of shopkeepers occupy the land outside their shops while scores of persons park their vehicle behind our shops.
Adil questioned that how come the state administration allows these vehicles to stay at the same place for a whole day when it creates teething troubles to the vehicular movements as well as the shoppers who visit their shops.
With the illegal car parking and illegal road occupancy by the shopkeepers, the traffic jams at the same place is on rise on the city roads, Adil said.
Locals also said that they are fed up with such occupancy of roads and said, We have to tailor our programme of meetings or joining offices accordingly. The traffic jams disrupts all the programme schedules of the day.
Citing the example of Lal Chowk to Batamaloo road, locals said that it takes around half an hour to cross the distance of half kilometre.
Business class is also against the poor management of traffic department who say that it hits their business.
Shopkeepers said that the occupation of roads in the said area also hinders movement for the shoppers who are on hurry at the time.
Due to the presence of these vehicles which have been illegally parked here we face immense hardships to walk on the roads. This poses risk of accidents, Aabid Hussain, a local resident said.
He said the administration are not paying heed to our plights, as they are not taking any kind of action regarding our sufferings, adding, The tall claims of the administration over the vehicular arrangements for the people has been proved absurd.
We appeal the administration to direct the concerned officers to take action against the persons who are illegally parking their vehicles at the same point. This will not only help to facilitate smooth vehicular traffic but also will help to the commuters, Aabid added.
When contacted, SSP traffic, Maqsood-ul-Zaman, said that he has himself bore the same almost ten times. We have seized several cars which were parked illegally on the same road. What else can we do more than but the car owners hardly pay heed over it and continue to park their cars at the said road, Zaman said.
He further said that the people occupy almost 70 per cent of the road by parking their cars illegally at Jahangir Chowk. We are trying our level best to redress the genuine problems faced by the commuters but until and unless the people wont cooperate with us then the same wont prove productive, he said. (KNS)
