Fog Jams Air Traffic, Slows Down Life in Kashmir

One dead in road accident near Mirgund

Srinagar: Dense fog blanketed Kashmir Valley on Monday morning reducing visibility to nil in some areas, bogging down traffic and causing numerous flight delays and disruption of rail service till noon.

The dense fog resulted in a road accident in North Kashmir that left the driver of a lorry dead. Reports said that a Tavera ferrying newspapers from Srinagar to North Kashmir collided with a cement mixer near Mirgund area that resulted in the death of lorry driver Mushtaq Ahmed Bhat of Ratnipora Pulwama.

Around 22 flights scheduled to depart or arrive at Srinagar Airport were Monday either cancelled or delayed due to intense foggy weather.

Due to heavy fog, no airline could operate today since morning, said Rajesh Shinde, Director, Srinagar Airport. Flights that arrive from 8 am to 12 am have all been cancelled. All other flights have been delayed.

While giving the break-up, he said Indigo (7), Air India (4), Spice Jet (4), Go Air (4) and Jet Airways (3) flights were either cancelled or delayed.

This (fog) is a normal phenomenon in the region during this time of the season, MeT department said.

It said that dense fog will continue on November 24 morning too, but visibility will be much better. Fog is basically a cloud near the ground, created out of moist air, calm winds and cooler temperatures.

It forms several times a year but in November its effect can be felt in a big way. It will disappear once there will be rainfall, said Director MeT Sonam Lotus.
