Srinagar: Traffic in City Centre Lal Chowk came to a standstill after locals from Maisuma and its adjacent areas blocked road near Budshah Bridge to protest against the Power Development Department. The non-availability of electricity today forced us to took to roads. It is the only medium to awake the rulers of the time who are in deep slumber, the protesting people said.
Due to protest and closure of the road, the vehicles got stranded and within a short time the city centre was flooded with vehicles resulting in massive traffic jam putting commuters in great trouble.
The protesters did not budge for more than three hours given the fact that all the top police and administrative officials rushed to spot to pacify them. Despite paying our bills in time, we didnt get electric supply. People have been suffering as NHPC has occupied all the power projects of the State while the attitude of the PDD towards the suffering people is callous and they resort to unscheduled power cuts all the time, the protesters said.
Reports said that after the repeated requests from the police and civil officials, the protesters ended their protest but warned of taking to roads again in case PDD fails to supply electricity to their areas.
