Srinagar: Army today paid rich tributes to Col Santosh Yashwant Mahadik who laid down his life fighting militants in Kupwara on Tuesday.
Paying tributes, a Defence Ministry spokesman said, Commanding a Rashtriya Rifles unit, the intrepid soldier, in keeping with the highest traditions of the Indian Army, led his men from the front while engaging terrorists in a fierce encounter in Manigah Forest Area of Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir yesterday.
A Special Forces officer, awarded earlier with a Sena Medal for gallantry, Col Mahadik had led many successful counter insurgency operations in the past and was known for his patriotic fervor and passion for his profession which he took immense pride in, he added.
In a solemn ceremony at Badami Bagh Cantt, Srinagar, the Army paid floral tributes to the officer who, according to the spokesman died by the Chetwode code that every army officer is pledged to.
The Northern Army Commander Lt Gen DS Hooda, Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen Satish Dua and IGP Kashmir Mr Javed Geelani laid wreath along with other army personnel of Chinar Corps.
Reflecting similar sentiments, Lt Gen Dua said that such selfless examples, in their sacrifice, reinforce the resolve of every soldier to thwart the nefarious designs of all elements inimical to national security and that their sacrifice will not be in vain.
