Child rights activist and Noble LaureateKailash Sathyathi today strongly advocated against amending theJunvenile Protection Act in the wake of the proposed amendment bythe Centre following the gang-rape of Nirbhaya in Delhi.
Speaking to newspersons here, he said, the definition of achild under 18 years should not be amended.
On the contentious question of juveniles responsible for seriouscrime, like Nirbhaya case in Delhi, where the lone minor among fouraccused in gang rape will be released shortly, Mr Sathyatrhi said, therenure slapped by the court was correct.
”But I agree that an adolescent before turning 19, in a fewmonths sexually assaults, say a 3-year-old child, the punishmentshould has to happen, as it is unfair to let off such youth withminor punishment” he said without elaborating.
The Nobel Laureaute, however said, punishment on adolescents in such cases could be increased.UNI RS MSP KVV AK 2020
