Srinagar: Police on Friday foiled the Jamia Mosque march called by Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to pay tributes to the martyrs of Jammu who were killed on this day 1947 days after the Indian Army landed in Kashmir.
To thwart the march, authorities imposed curfew like restrictions under the jurisdiction of Police station Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rainawari, Safakadal, MR Gunj and Maisuma. Roads wore a deserted look in old Srinagar city where only government forces were seen deploying in strength on roads in and around Srinagars old city wherein the historical Jamia Masjid is situated. Besides Mirwaiz, police also detained all the separatist leaders who were invited in the march.
All the separatist leaders have been detained already in view of the Million March called by the separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and in view of the Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit today.
Reports of clashed between youth and security forces were also received from various places in Old City.
Meanwhile, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly condemned the restrictions, saying, it is highly unfortunate that the rulers for staying in power, for their selfish interests and to please their masters in Delhi take hostage the entire population, impose bans on Friday prayers and try to choke the space for any political activities of the resistance camp by resorting to arrests, detentions, using excessive force and military might and by placing restrictions on the movement of people.
He appealed to the international community, various rights bodies, people and nations that believe in justice and fair play, and international bodies meant for protecting human rights to take note of these violations against the people of Kashmir.
Mirwaiz also appealed to the people to make the November 7 programme of Million March a success and strongly condemned the arrests and house arrests of the resistance leaders, Hurriyat activists and youth.
