Poonch: A village head affiliated with National Conference (NC) has been booked under section 307 (attempt to murder) by police after he attacked a contractor seeking payment of his work in Mendhar area of Poonch district.
Official sources told Srinagar-based news agency GNS that NCs Youth block president and Naib Sarpanch of Harmutta in Gursai in Mendhar Sarafarz Chowdhary had last year given work under MGNREGA worth 50 thousand to a contractor namely Haji Muhammad Azam of the same area.
They said that the Naib Sarpanch had created hurdles in the issuance of payment to the contractor. He had taken 15 thousand rupees from the contractor for getting his payment cleared from Panchayat Commissioner Haq Nawaz. However, the said commissioner too was hand in glove with the Naib Sarpanch, the sources said.
The NC man sought additional five thousand rupees from the contractor for the release of his payment and the latter paid them as well.
However the Naib Sarpanch was in no mood to get the payment released and today he from another NC man namely Baji Farooq summoned the contractor to partys office in Mendhar Town. Farooq called the contractor and told him that the matter would be sorted out through negotiations, the sources said.
As the contractor went to the office of NC today, the Naib Sarpanch hit his head with a chair leaving him critically injured. The injured contractor was immediately rushed to Sub District Hospital Mendhar and got 28 stitches on his head.
Meanwhile, the relatives and family members of the contractor staged massive protests against the Naib Sarpanch and demanded his immediate arrest. Subsequently, police registered a case under FIR number 139 under sections 307 and 323 RPC. The accused however is absconding.
SHO Mendhar Anzar told the GNS that the accused would be nabbed soon and action against him would be taken as per law. (GNS)
