SRINAGAR: A Surnakote family has alleged that a police party headed by Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Surankote, Riaz Tantray, in search of an accused who had escaped police custody on 7 October 2015, raided their house and attacked the family members of the accused.
Serious allegations of assault and molestation have surfaced during the raid, family sources said.
According to the sources, numerous persons have suffered grievous injury and have been hospitalized.
The incident must not be seen in isolation, Advocate Parvez Imroz of the Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society said. Serious allegations of assault and extortion continue against the SDPO Riaz Tantray in other cases. But, to date, there has been no action. Political patronage to the SDPO is extended by his cousin MLA Shah Mohammad Tantray.
The situation in Poonch is exacerbated by its distance from legal support which is available only in Srinagar, he said. In addition, the State Human Rights Commission is not an option as it continues to be defunct.
Following a FIR, the Advocate demanded action must be taken against the erring SDPO. As an immediate step, the Jammu and Kashmir State Womens Commission must immediately take cognizance of the incident in Potha and take appropriate action, he said.
