Names of 3 retired judges for post of chairman under consideration
Srinagar: After feeling pressure from the High Court, the PDP led State Government is all set to appoint the new Chairman and four members of State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
Official sources said that the government is committed to revive SHRC and provide it with adequate administrative support and manpower for achieving the desired results as per the constitution acts under which this commission is constituted,” the official said.
Pertinently, the High Court has directed the state government to constitute the State Human Rights Commission till October 15 next mongh.
Ruling on a petition filed by a Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Forum through its Council M.M. Shuja to constitute SHRC, the division bench of the High Court comprising chief Justice Kuamr Vassannta Patil and Justice Hasnain Masoodi directed the state government to constitute SHRC without any dealy.
Reliable sources told CNS that Government is considering three names that could be selected for the coveted post of Chairperson SHRC. A Chairman ought to be retired High Court Judge and there are three retired High Court Judges who can be appointed as Chairman SHRC. They are Justice Bilal Nazki, Sunil Haali and Brij Lal Bhat, the official said.
Sources said that Government does not want to take any chance while appointing the four members of the Commission. SHRC is a prestigious institution and it needs members who should possess the knowledge the human rights. Chief Minister Muftif Muhammad Sayeed raised the issue during his recent meeting with the Governor of the State and a hunt has been launched to look for the eminent personalities that could be appointed as the members of the Commission. Besides, the government will also appoint a new Chairman for the Consumer Commission, whose Chairman Bashir Ahmed Kirmani was recently appointed as a member of the State Accountability Commission, the top government official said.
Pertinently, from June last year the SHRC has completely become non functional as the state has neither appointed any chairperson nor any member of the commission for the discharge of their constitutional and statutory functions. The records reveal that 2190 cases are pending for disposal in the Commission.
