MCI norms flouted blatantly by admins
SRINAGAR: The healthcare system of Kashmir is ailing as major hospitals of the Kashmir are facing shortage of ventilators resulting in death of critically ill patients who desperately need the life support system to save their lives.
My brother is suffering from a kidney disorder and he is on ventilator but it was very difficult to arrange it as there are few ventilators available in the hospital, said Arif wani from Tral.
According to MCI norms, at least five ventilators should be available for 100 beds. But in Kashmir, there is lack of life saving equipments even not having minimum requirement in the hospitals as administration has failed in doing so.
Our patient was critically injured and we took him to the SMHS hospital at first, then we realized the unavailability of ventilator in the hospital so we took him to private hospital for better treatment, said Firdous Ahmed a resident of Rainawari.
At SMHS hospital there are only 12 ventilators which are not sufficient for so many people. At least thousands of patients visit the hospital per day which is logically not enough and sometimes when we refer a patient to other hospital, they also cannot accommodate as they are also lacking in life saving equipments. So the only solution is to provide basic facilities with man power to run it, so that patients lives could be saved on time said a doctor at SMHS hospital.
People fight with each other on ventilators as there is acute shortage of it in this hospital. Our child was very ill for last 10 days and we have admitted him to this hospital but there is no ventilator available now, so we have wait for it, said Fahmeeda, a parent of patient from GB pant hospital.
The government run hospitals have become a cruel joke as there is no basic life supporting system working in the major hospitals, not talk of peripheral hospitals in Kashmir which is itself a sense of shame for the administration. For the last 25 years major hospitals in Kashmir have not gone through such a progress as there is ill prepared administration and Government at the helm of affairs, said a group of attendants outside SKIMS hospital.
While commenting on the issue DAK President Dr. Nisar-ul-Hassan said, Patients are dying for the need of ventilators as most of the hospitals in Kashmir are having shortage of life saving equipments.
The main responsibility lies on the administration as they have put the lives of patients at risk by their improper and mismanagement affairs which have directly led to the downfall of the healthcare system in Kashmir. There is a total collapse of patient care as mortality rate of patients has increased to an alarming level, he further added.
