LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) claimed on Wednesday to have seized several tonnes of suspected pig meat from Lahore, Express News reported.
PFA officials carried out a raid near the Lahore Railway Station and recovered a huge quantity of suspicious meat after receiving reports of pig meat being supplied to the city, Director General PFA Ayesha Mumtaz said.
We have been receiving reports for some time that haram meat and the meat of dead animals is being supplied to food joints in the adjoining areas of Lahore, she added.
Further, the DG PFA said that one suspect, who was allegedly involved in supplying the suspicious meat, has been arrested and further investigations are being carried out.
However, the supplier of the meat denied allegations that the seized meat was pork. It is actually the pancreas of halal animals obtained from local slaughter houses. This meat is used in the tanning industry, the supplier, Tauseef, said while speaking to Express News.
Meanwhile, the suspected meat has been sent to a laboratory for DNA testing and final results will be shared with the media, the DG PFA said. The suspect was supplying the meat from Rawalpindi to Lahore and its neighbouring villages, she added.
Further, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the suspected meat being supplied in the province and directed strict action against those involved in the act.
The DG PFA has been playing an active role against unhygienic food being sold throughout the province especially in Lahore.
