Kulgam: A farmer was mauled to death and five others, including three women left seriously injured by a stray bear in an orchard in Kulgam district on Thursday.
Police sources said that the deceased Gul Muhammad Mir, a resident of Hardmandhguri, Noorabad Kulgam accompanied by five others including three women had gone to an orchard when they came face to face with the beast. Fearing for their lives, they attacked it with an axe. The animal retaliated, mauled Gul Mir to death and then attacked others including Salam Wagay, Dilshada Banoo, Muneera Akhtar, Nilofar Jan and Rumi Jan.
Salam Wagay and Muneera Jan are critical and were referred to SKIMS Srinagar while others are being treated at Sub District Hospital Kulgam, said a police official.
Meanwhile, locals in the area alleged that the inaction from Wild Life Department has put the innocent lives at risk. Wild animals roam freely in the area and people feel scared from venturing out from their houses, they said.
