Srinagar: Theater for Kashmir will present a Kashmiri adaptation of Shakespeares classic theatre play Hamlet, titled Uff ti Karakh Na?
This adaptation is a contemporary take of Shakespeares famous tragedy and is weaved around indecisiveness of the protagonist who ultimately may or may not reach a decision. To be or not to be of Hamlet manifests into meoun assun ya ne assun of Hamza who is caught in a catch 22 situation and ultimately may find its expression at a sub conscious level.
Yousuf Shahnaaz a veteran theatre worker will lead the talented cast of versatile Ashraf Nagoo, intense Mian Mushtaq and endowed Ahmad Riyaz Mir who will present the play along with other supporting cast of Ashraf Hajni, Waseem Khan, Rayees Wathori, Bilal Baghat, Obaid Wani, Rasik Khan,Mudasir Ahmad, Jafar Ahmad along with a group of folk performers this Saturday. The dialogues have been written by Mir Maqbool, who has kept the local Kashmiri flavor intact while adding a punch to this interpretation.
Uff ti Karakh Na? has been designed and directed by noted playwright and theatre director Arshad Mushtaq whose earlier plays Su yee (He will Come) , Bea chus Shahid (I am the Witness) among others have been well received by critics and audience alike.Theatre for Kashmir having presented various productions like Wattepaed(Footprints), Aalav(The Call) etc across the various venues over last decade, has been part of numerous international theatre festivals taking Kashmiri theatre to new audiences across South Asia apart from conducting educational theatre workshops and seminars over the years.
The play will be staged at the historic SP College Auditorium at 5pm on 29th of August. This adaptation has already generated interest among the students of literature as this classic text of Shakespeare is a part of the curriculum at the University level. (CNS)
