Police officer among 7 injured; FIR filed; Cop arrested
PULWAMA: Police resorted to aerial firing and tear-gas shelling to quell violent protests that erupted after an SOG constable allegedly tried to molest a girl in town square here Monday afternoon.
Reports said that situation turned ugly when people spotted an SOG constable from Jammu Kashmir Police harassing and passing lewd remarks on a girl near Rajpora Chowk in the district.
A group of people apprehended the cop and started thrashing him, forcing the other cops to fire bullets in air. The gun shots created panic in the area and during the melee several people were injured.
One of the SOG personnel deployed near Rajpora Chowk was seen stalking a local girl. The girl who used to run a shop, slapped the cop in full public glare, drawing the attention of the passersby, who lost cool and pounced upon the stalker, said an eyewitness.
The girl from Puchal area (name withheld) said that the stalker cop from Sopore used to harass her for past quite some time. I have been running a shop and the cop frequently used to visit my shop despite my objections. He even threatened of implicating me in militant related activity in case I did not develop illicit relationship with him. Today, I lost my patience and slapped him in full public view after he tried to force me to come along with him, she said.
Reports said that as the news about the incident spread, people especially youth took to streets in large numbers and attacked policemen with stones. Due to violent clashes, the shopkeepers downed their shutters and transport disappeared from the roads resulting in the complete shutdown in the town.
Eyewitnesses said that police and para-military personnel resorted to aerial firing and scores of tear-smoke shells were fired to disperse the stone-throwing protesters. The agitated protesters didnt budge and continued to hurl stones of police vehicles. Police sources said that four police personnel including an officer were injured during the clashes. One of the cop Muhammad Ashraf suffered a serious head injury and was shifted to Srinagar for advanced treatment while the other injured cops including DySP Headquarters Shams-ul-Muzaffar, Constables Tariq Ahmed and Azad Ahmed were admitted in District Hospital Pulwama.
According to the SP Pulwama Tajindar Singh after receiving a complaint about eve-teasing from a local girl, they registered a case against accused SOG man whom he identified as Babur Ahmed from Sopore town. We have registered a case vide FIR number 261/2015 under relevant sections against the cop and he has been suspended from the service, he said. —With inputs from CNS
Cop Suspended
SRINAGAR: The J&K police Monday suspended an SOG constable who is accused of eve teasing.
The police issued a statement saying: Today at about 3:30 pm a girl alleged that a police constable misbehaved with her in the town Pulwama. Taking advantage of situation some miscreants started stone pelting as a result of which the situation got deteriorated, the statement said.
Meanwhile, District police Pulwama swung into action and while dealing with the situation two policemen were injured in pelting and the miscreants were dispersed and situation was brought under control.
On the complaint of girl, a case FIR number 261/2015 under section 294 RPC was registered and the cop was immediately suspended. Further investigation in this regard is on, the statement added.
DGP reviews security situation in South
SRINAGAR: Stressing the need for efficient strategy to counter the nefarious designs of bad elements, the Director General of Police (DGP), Mr. K Rajendra Kumar has said that people friendly policing and better deliverance are the effective methods to reach out to people. He said that zero tolerance for human rights violations and collateral damages is to be ensured while dealing tough situations.
Mr. Rajendra was addressing police officers meeting at Anantnag during his one day visit to South Kashmir today. The meeting was convened to review the security and law and order situation in the South Kashmir Police districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian and Awantipora.
The DGP asked the officers to make coordinated efforts with other security agencies to thwart the attempts by subversive elements who regain their strength by engaging youth in anti-social activities. Input sharing is imperative for achieving desired results. He asked the officers to involve youth in community policing which could help in channelizing their energies in a better way.
