Shot At Bear, Bullet Instead Hit Man in Handwara

SRINAGAR: A man was hit by bullet when officials from police and wildlife Department reportedly fired upon a wild bear running amok in the Handwara area Monday afternoon.

Sources said Irshad Ahmad Magray was admitted to hospital after police and wildlife officials reportedly aimed their shot at a wild bear but missed the intended target. Magray, hit by the bullet, was  injured, these reports said.

Officials, however, dismissed the reports claiming that bear had mauled a woman in Gondrazak area of Handwara on Monday.

The woman, Fehmeeda Begum (38), wife of Mushtaq Ahmad Rather was critically mauled by the wild bear, they said. Immediately after the incident, wildlife officials rushed to the spot and fired a tranquilizer at the beast with gun which it reportedly missed. “The bear fled to the woods,” the officials said.

However the residents of Gund Razak village of Haril area alleged that Irshad Ahmad, son of Ghulam Hassan Magray received a bullet in his leg when a team of policemen fired shots in a bid to capture the bear this afternoon. The youth was removed to the hospital where his condition was said to be stable.

Fehmeeda Begum, who was critically injured in the bear attack, was removed to the SKIMS here. Her condition was described as critical.

According to the SP Handwara, Ghulam Jeelani it was an accidental fire.

“Our men were trying to capture the bear when the youth got injured. His condition is stable,” Jeelani said. He however parried question about why the police  used live ammunition instead of tranquilizer to neutralize the beast.
